Grocer Scares Off Robber With 2x4

A Seattle store owner fought off an armed robber with nothing more than a piece of wood.

Gemere Amara, owner of Victory Grocery in South Seattle, told Komo News that a masked man walked into his grocery store around 9:45 p.m. on Monday night and demanded an employee give him money from the cash register. While he fumbled with the register, Amara came out of the back room wielding a 2x4 piece of wood.

"I got a stick because he had a gun," Amara told Komo News. "I just, you know, [wanted to] protect myself."

But he didn't just charge the would-be armed robber in his story, he continued to chase the suspect down the street. The robber fired two shots towards Amara before climbing into a black car for a quick getaway. Neither of the two shots hit anyone.

"We always say, do what you have to do to get out of a situation to make yourself safe," Renee Witt of the Seattle Police Department told Komo News. "Chasing someone with a 2x4, you don't know if they are armed or not. Maybe, maybe not."

Although Amara was forced to use a plank of wood to defend himself this time, he said he plans on purchasing a gun in the near future.

Anyone with information about the incident in Seattle is asked to contact the robbery unit at (206) 684-5535.
