The U.S. has averaged two episodes of mass murder a year for the past 15 years. And the odds are good that we will carry this sorry record forward forever into the future. Each tragedy provokes a predictable round of shock, grieving, soul searching, and finger pointing. Why would someone do something so crazy? Who missed what warning signs? Why weren't the victims better warned or better protected? What can we do to prevent this type of awful tragedy from constantly recurring?
Everyone is intensely interested in the psychology of the killer. There is a presumption that if we can understand the mind of the mass murderer then perhaps we can prevent the mass murders. This is dead wrong. Psychiatry has no way of predicting or preventing rare and fairly random acts of senseless violence -- it is simply impossible to find needles in haystacks. We must accept the fact that a small cohort of deranged and disaffected potential mass murderers will always exist undetected in our midst. The only questions are how often will these ticking time bombs go off and how much damage will they do when detonated.
The largely unnoticed elephant in the room is how astoundingly easy it always is for the killers to buy supercharged firearms and unlimited rounds of ammo. The ubiquity of powerful weaponry is what makes the U.S. such a dangerous place to live. Guns do kill people and the number of people depends on the number of guns and the number of rounds they can fire in a given period of time. Successful political scare tactics have buried open discussion of the most obvious of simple truths: that the wide circulation of powerful semi-automatic weapons will inevitably result in a lot of preventable deaths. So don't be at all surprised when there are a couple of mass murders every year -- it is built into our current system. The U.S. has the one of developed world's worst statistics for mass murders and gun deaths because we have so many powerful guns floating around and gun laws that allow murderers easy access to them.
Add to the mix the egregiously vitriolic and verbally violent discourse of demagogic politicians and talk show hosts -- egging on those vulnerable to physical violence and providing them with a seeming justification for their callous brutality. And I wonder about the collective conscience of those working in the video game and movie industry who have promoted a grotesque culture of violence.
There is no psychiatric solution for mass murder. Armchair analyses of the individual culprits are interesting (but harmful) distractions. We really have only two choices: 1) accept mass murder as part of the American way of life, or 2) get in line with the rest of the civilized world and adopt sane gun control policies. The smart money is betting on the gun lobby and Hollywood -- and betting against the future victims and their families.

Kent Otho Doering3 Fans 4 hours ago ( 3:33 PM)I am definitely a fan of Prof. Frances about sane gun control. .I am an ex-pat American peacefully and happilly residing in Munich, a very safe place to live thanks to " strict and sane gun contol". The only time i ws ever shot at while living in Europe was once getting caught in the crossfire in a 3 way shoot-out between Albanain cigarette and drug smugglers, the local "Danghretti" (Mafia) and the police in Bari, on the SE coast of italy.
Gernany has only had one incident like this. A psychotic kid broke into his father´s gun cabinet. L(his dad was a registered and licensed hunter.) and took out about 8 students at a German "gymnasium" (high school) in a copycat Columbine.shootout.
Easy access to guns lets the psychos get guns. But the sad fact is, in most cases of homicide in the U.S. the perps and the victims knew eachother, and the perps were under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
Germans and Americans practice "social darwinism" differentntly. . Germans have no speed liimits on many stretches of autobahn, and Americans have no sane gun control. I prefer the Porsches over handguns..Kent_Otho_Doering: I am definitely a fan of Prof. Frances about sanehttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/social/Kent_Otho_Doering/mass-murders-madness-and-_b_1713812_173119408.htmlHistory |Permalink |Share itThis comment has been down-ranked into oblivion. Also, a control variable here has been left out; how many shooters have been stopped in their tracks by legally armed citizens? Those events occur without media fanfare ( they sell less advertisements which is how reporters get paid.) As for the victims, they were not allowed to defend themselves, that gave the bad guy an advantage. When law abiding citizens die and murderers survive then it is time to change the law.Mister_Science: If it happens at a regular rate, as stated inhttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/social/Mister_Science/mass-murders-madness-and-_b_1713812_172934297.htmlHistory |Permalink |Share it

Darkingz41 Fans 18 hours ago ( 2:01 AM)its regular in the sense of random and unpredictability, think about it. There's other science models that assert irregularity is regular. As for the second half, so you stop a mass murderer in a middle of a panic? You are assuming a total ban, which is not what the author is calling for, but rather sensible controls. At this point of the argument, you'll probably bring up a slippery slope argument, what stops the government from banning hand gun rounds and etc. My response to that is do you really think carrying around an AK-47 will protect you any more than a handgun? Also what stops the crowd from panicking and unsensibly running while standing in the prescence of a gun man? so when will you take your clear shot, if the other patrons aren't cooperating (to be fair in a moment of panic, not everyone is very cogniant about is going on and do the wrong thing, we think we would not until that sudden event).Darkingz: its regular in the sense of random and unpredictability, thinkhttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/social/Darkingz/mass-murders-madness-and-_b_1713812_172972865.htmlHistory |Permalink |Share it David Tupper0 Fans 4 hours ago ( 4:14 PM)Pearl, Mississippi, Appalachian School of Law, University of Texas (older but still relevant), all mass shootings stopped by civilians. Actually, the Appalachian School of Law was stopped by cops but they were a) off-duty and b) had to return to their cars to retrieve their weapons. There are more I'm sure, some of which may never be reported as such because the first victim defended themselves. There are between 850,000 and 2,500,000 defensive gun uses per year (true number will never be known as many go unreported to police, gun shown, bad guy runs, no shots fired), would you have those people just give up when confronted because you don't feel they should be armed? I don't and I don't think most people would.David_Tupper: Pearl, Mississippi, Appalachian School of Law, University of Texas (olderhttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/social/David_Tupper/mass-murders-madness-and-_b_1713812_173131856.htmlHistory |Permalink |Share itThis comment has been down-ranked into oblivion. If by chance you can, it is going to take you several months, cost many thousands of dollars, your going to be investigated, you going to give up some of your future rights that other citizens have. It is no small thing.

delridge pronzini0 Fans 05:17 PM on 07/30/2012A massacre was attempted in the same town a few months earlier. A man entered a church but only managed to kill one churchgoer before being shot by and killed by a church member who had concealed hand gun. This latest massacre was at a movie theater that does not allow concealed weapons. This was probably a factor in the target selection. This killer also had bomb making material and gas weapons. These are easily improvised from over the shelf products and are just as deadly. Firearms are not the problem. Beware those that wish to disarm you.delridge_pronzini: A massacre was attempted in the same town a fewhttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/social/delridge_pronzini/mass-murders-madness-and-_b_1713812_172862263.htmlHistory |Permalink |Share itThis comment has been down-ranked into oblivion. David Shaul Goldberger0 Fans 05:15 PM on 07/30/2012So if there are 2 mass murders a year thats probably under 30 people a year. And 400,000 people die a year from smoking and our cigarette labels are much more vague then ones in other countries. So why are we concerning ourselves with mass murder like it's an epidemic when really it affects an infinitesimal amount of people compared to other serious threats, like smoking and obesity. These deranged people who want to commit mass murder can and often times do get their weapons legally because they are available. If these weapons were illegal, they would get more powerful arms illegally. It's not stopping the bad guys, just making it more inconvenient for the good guys to enjoy some target practice and skeet shooting.David_Shaul_Goldberger: So if there are 2 mass murders a year thatshttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/social/David_Shaul_Goldberger/mass-murders-madness-and-_b_1713812_172861765.htmlHistory |Permalink |Share itThis comment has been down-ranked into oblivion. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1196941/The-violent-country-Europe-Britain-worse-South-Africa-U-S.html
This shows the UK having a violent crime rate 4.5 times higher than in the US. The next 4 countries have 2 - 3 times higher rates of violent crime than the US.
What do all these countries have in common? Restrictive gun laws.subdriver: When you guys will quit just talking about gun violencehttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/social/subdriver/mass-murders-madness-and-_b_1713812_172853773.htmlHistory |Permalink |Share it

Trev Smith823 Fans 15 hours ago ( 5:25 AM)This is a very misleading article to quote without being able to see the full details of the survey itself (especially given the Daily Mail's propensity for VERY bad, sensationalist reporting). As is made clear, the UK is 4th for burglary, 5th for robbery and 13th for homicide in the EU, not sure where the US would be in these lists but as far as I am aware the US has one of the worst homicide rates worldwide. Additionally it is unclear what constitutes violent crime in this study. A bar fight might constitute a violent crime and it is my understanding that in the UK any sort of violence/fighting would be considered a chargeable crime, whereas I believe in the US two guys having a fight would not be taken very seriously unless someone was badly hurt. I may be wrong, but this is the impression I get. Articles like this, especially in the Daily Mail, should not necessarily be taken too seriously without looking into the actual research more.Trev_Smith82: This is a very misleading article to quote without beinghttp://www.huffingtonpost.com/social/Trev_Smith82/mass-murders-madness-and-_b_1713812_172986270.htmlHistory |Permalink |Share it

subdriver0 Fans 9 hours ago (10:25 AM)The point I was trying to make is that taking away law abiding citizens firearms doesn't do anything to stop criminals from being criminals. If anything, it emboldens them since they no longer have to worry about a would be victim having the chance to fight back. While you may have a point on how the UK categorizes crime, what about the other countries? Two guys having a fight is considered assault, and yes, police do take that very seriously.
