Cops Seek Vehicle In Violent Murder Of Teen

Police in Georgia are looking for a silver four-door passenger car that may be connected to the violent and tragic murder of 16-year-old Hannah Truelove last month.

Patch reports that the car -- a late 90s Chevrolet or Dodge -- was last seen near the Gainesville apartment complex, around where Truelove was killed in the woods on Aug. 23. She may have been inside the vehicle that day.

Few other details are available. Hall County Police say they've narrowed down the case to several persons of interest, but no names have been released. They believe that Truelove knew her killer.

Truelove's father, Jeff, spoke to Channel 2 News for the first time on Friday.

"I can't understand it. I mean, who can do that to somebody? It's so brutal," he said.

He said that his daughter had just moved to her mother's house at Lake Lanier apartment complex a month before she was found dead by a neighbor. He thinks the killer may be someone who rode a bus to school with her.

Man Charged In Murder Of UK Schoolgirl

LONDON -- The partner of the grandmother of a missing British schoolgirl was charged Saturday with the 12-year-old's murder, police said.

The charge came as police apologized to Tia Sharp's mother after they failed to find the girl's body in her grandmother's house the first three times they searched it.

Scotland Yard blamed "human error" and apologized for "the distress and concern" caused by the delay in finding Sharp's body, which was discovered Friday in the house – her last known whereabouts – one week after she disappeared in south London.

Stuart Hazell, the 37-year-old partner of Tia's grandmother Christine Sharp, has been charged with murder and will appear in court on Monday.

Two others, a 46-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of murder and a 39-year-old man suspected of "assisting an offender," have been bailed to return to a London police station, they said.

Neither suspect was identified by name in line with British practice, and police did not disclose what relationship, if any, the suspects had with the victim. The Press Association and the BBC said the woman was Christina Sharp, and the man was a neighbor.

It is not yet known how the schoolgirl died, and a post-mortem examination is expected to take place Sunday.

The discovery of Tia Sharp's body led to anger and disbelief in Britain. The family's frantic search and appeals had even managed to displace much of the feel-good Olympic coverage from the front pages of the nation's tabloids, with at one point The Sun offering 25,000 pounds (nearly $40,000) for the tip that led to the girl's safe return.

The Daily Mirror newspaper asked its readers "WHY DID IT TAKE COPS 8 DAYS?" with the figure 8 outlined in red. The Daily Mail was even more critical, writing under a bold-faced "SHAMBLES" headline: "Despite a week-long hunt by 100 police with dogs, Tia is found dead in her granny's house, which officers had searched THREE times."

Police have not specified exactly where in the house the body was found, but Scotland Yard Commander Neil Basu said Friday they had been juggling several different leads with detectives sifting through 60 sightings of the missing girl, 300 calls, and 800 hours of surveillance footage.

Charge Against Missing Mom's Boyfriend Upgraded To Murder

The family of homicide victim Kelly Armstrong said media attention prompted Indiana prosecutors to upgrade charges against boyfriend Travis Funke from manslaughter to murder.

"We honestly think that the DA would not have done this if it was not for the national attention brought by The Huffington Post and local efforts by FOX59. We just don't think he would have done it," said Armstrong's cousin, Charity Grable.

Prosecutor Mark McCann filed the murder charge against 34-year-old Funke on Friday afternoon, according to Howard Superior Court Judge Brant Howard. A hearing has been scheduled for Tuesday.

This is the second victory in a week for Armstrong's family. On Tuesday, a plea deal that may have freed Funke in 17-1/2 years and allowed him to retain custody of his 4-year-old son was withdrawn.

Armstrong's family members, saying the plea deal wasn't discussed with them, had expressed anger and filed a formal
complaint against McCann.

Armstrong's father said the plea deal fell apart amid media reports. He singled out the Huffington Post for being the first national news organization to report on the issue.

"I think it was a combination of those things," Armstrong said Thursday, referring to the media attention and the family's protests.

Armstrong told HuffPost Friday he is pleased that prosecutors upgraded the charge to murder, but upset it took so long. "It should have been done a long time ago," he said.

Kelly Armstrong, 28, disappeared in August 2011. She and Funke lived together with their baby in Kokomo, about 50 miles north of Indianapolis. Funke was arrested on Sept. 28, 2011, on an unrelated warrant. When authorities interviewed Funke on Jan. 6, Funke told investigators he killed Armstrong around July 1, 2011, police said. He said he placed her body in a garbage bin. Multiple searches have failed to locate Armstrong's body.

Kelly Armstrong, 28, disappeared in August 2011.

Kelly Armstrong was reported missing in Kokomo, Indiana on Sept. 26, 2011.

In February, Howard County Prosecutor Mark McCann charged Travis Funke with voluntary manslaughter.

Authorities interviewed Travis Funke about Kelly Armstrong (pictured) on Jan. 6. During the interview he allegedly told investigators he had killed Armstrong around July 1, 2011. "[Funke] stated that he and Kelly had been fighting for three days ... Funke stated that he fell asleep on the couch and he awoke to Kelly hitting the couch with a hammer. Funke stated that he believes that Kelly hit him on the head with the hammer and knocked him out. Funke stated that, when he came to, Kelly was dead on the floor and bleeding from the head. Funke said that he has memories of hitting her in the head with a hammer but thought that it was a dream," the affidavit reads. Funke allegedly said he placed a plastic bag on Armstrong's head, wrapped her in a tarp and put her in a trash tote. The garbage container was supposedly picked up later that same day and the contents were dumped at Wabash Valley Landfill in Wabash. Authorities spent several days sifting through rubbish at the landfill but they were unable to locate Armstrong's remains.

The district attorney's office and Kokomo police have repeatedly declined to discuss the investigation with The Huffington Post.

While law enforcement has stopped actively searching for Kelly Armstrong, her family continues to lead community searches. Grable said those efforts are suffering. "We have no idea where to go -- where to look for her and we can't get a professional search group to come help us," she said.

Grable said the family had pinned hopes on additional media coverage.

"We have reached out to CNN and Fox News to help us get more national coverage, but they won't even bother to return our messages," Grable said.

People interested in helping search or donating funds can do so at Operationfindkelly.yolasite.com. The family also maintains a Facebook page devoted to the case.

Feds Say Man Who Served 15 Years For Murder May Be Innocent

Eric Glisson Eric Glisson (R), 37, with his attorney, Peter Cross, at Sing Sing Correctional Facility in New York.

NEW YORK -- Earlier this year, a man locked up more than 15 years for murder wrote federal prosecutors in Manhattan telling them what he'd said all along and what authorities hear from inmates all the time: that he was wrongly convicted.

But in this instance, Eric Glisson also named members of a violent drug gang he suggested were the true killers. It was a shot in the dark. But it turns out he may be right.

Authorities and defense attorneys say the letter has become a catalyst for a possible reprieve for Glisson and four other people serving time for the 1995 slaying of a cab driver in the Bronx – a homicide all say they didn't commit.

"I'm pretty optimistic I'll be released," Glisson told The Associated Press in a brief phone interview Friday from Sing Sing prison, 30 miles north of New York City.

"It's been an uphill struggle," he added. "But I've always believed right will overpower wrong."

After reinvestigating the case at Glisson's urging, federal prosecutors provided new evidence to the Bronx district attorney. The findings have not been made public, and a spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney's office declined to comment.

But The New York Times reported Friday that they include an affidavit from a federal investigator who reviewed the case and concluded that the evidence was "overwhelming" that two convicted gang members "acting alone, robbed and shot" the Bronx cabbie.

When the 37-year-old Glisson heard federal authorities were prepared to take the rare step of vouching for a state convict's innocence, "I was elated," he said. But the elation subsided when Bronx prosecutors, after being presented with the new evidence at a meeting last month, balked at admitting they botched the prosecution.

Prosecutors told Glisson's attorney, Peter A. Cross, he would have to file a motion asking a judge to order a new trial – a process that could take months.

In his statement, District Attorney Robert Johnson said his office was taking the matter seriously, but had "not yet been able to resolve all of the questions that have been raised by this evidence." His spokesman declined to comment further on Friday.

Livery cab driver Baith Diop was gunned down on Jan. 19, 1995, amid a rash of taxi driver murders around the city. Press accounts had described how, according to police, the Senegalese immigrant begged for his life before being shot in the back and neck. Ballistics showed that he was shot with two .38-caliber handguns that were never recovered.

Rather than treat the crime as a fatal holdup, New York Police Department detectives and prosecutors linked it to a complex conspiracy by a band of drug dealers involved in the execution-style killing of a woman two days earlier. Investigators alleged that Diop was killed as part of a related scheme to steal a pile of drug money that one of his passengers was carrying that night.

At the first of two trials, three men were convicted in both the killing of the woman and Diop. At the second, a jury found Glisson and another defendant guilty in the cabbie homicide. All received lengthy sentences.

Glisson's lawyer said that as the years passed, his client exhausted all his appeals before writing the letter to federal prosecutors. In it, he said he had heard that the cabbie killing was the work of a gang called Sex, Money and Murder or SMM.

The letter, though addressed to a prosecutor who had left the office, by coincidence made its way into the hands of an investigator who was a former Bronx homicide detective familiar with SMM, the Times reported.

The names of two SMM members rang a bell: Both had confessed to killing a Bronx cab driver in late 1994 or early 1995 – an admission that couldn't be corroborated at the time – after becoming cooperators in 2003.

The investigator re-interviewed the two men. They described again how they were riding in a cab together when they decided to rob the driver. When he put up a fight, they shot him and jumped out of the car without knowing whether he was dead.

Glisson's hope that the investigator's belief in his innocence is his ticket to vindication is tempered by years of disappointment.

"Deep down, I feel like the justice system failed me," he said. "But you just have to try to move on."

Peterson Murder Trial Continues With Second Day Of Testimony

JOLIET, Ill. — The judge in the Drew Peterson murder trial has adjourned early and delayed a decision on declaring a mistrial.

A legal drama erupted Wednesday after a state witness let slip testimony that defense lawyers claim irreparably tainted jurors.

Instead of ruling immediately on the defense's mistrial motion, the judge granted a request to let Peterson's lawyers think through the matter until Thursday morning.

The witness, Thomas Pontarelli, mentioned on the stand that he once found a .38-caliber bullet in his driveway and believed Peterson planted it there to intimidate him.

Peterson is accused of killing his third wife, Kathleen Savio. Pontarelli was her neighbor.

With jurors out of the room, Judge Edward Burmila blasted prosecutors for working in the testimony. He called it a new "low."

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

The judge in Drew Peterson's murder trial considered Wednesday whether to declare a mistrial after blasting prosecutors for a second time in less than two days for bringing up information he said could prejudice the jury against the former police officer.

A furious Judge Edward Burmila sent jurors out of the courtroom before grilling prosecutor Kathleen Patton for allowing a witness to mention a bullet and leave the impression that Peterson left it in the witness' driveway. Burmila then took a recess to allow defense attorneys to file a motion for mistrial.

"It can't be reckless, it is intentional," Peterson attorney Steve Greenberg told the judge when court reconvened, arguing that prosecutors violated court orders.

Peterson was charged in the 2004 death of his third wife, Kathleen Savio, after his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, went missing in 2007. Drew Peterson is suspected in her disappearance but hasn't been charged.

Patton said prosecutors didn't deliberately try to get the witness, former Peterson neighbor Thomas Pontarelli, to mention that he found the .38-caliber bullet on his driveway.

The judge appeared close to declaring a mistrial Tuesday after a prosecutor began to discuss an allegation that Peterson once tried to hire a hit man.

Prosecutors contend Peterson killed Savio and tried to make it look like an accident. Defense attorney Joel Brodsky told jurors repeatedly during his opening statement that there was no evidence Savio's death was anything but a tragic accident.

Peterson's real-life drama inspired a TV movie starring Rob Lowe, and many speculated whether the former police sergeant used his law-enforcement expertise to get away with Savio's murder and make 23-year-old Stacy Peterson vanish.
