The family of a Crete, Ill. woman who fell to her death while trying to slide down a staircase banister at a party has filed a lawsuit against the organizers of an event and the hotel that hosted it, accusing event staff of overserving guests and the hotel chain of failing to provide adequate security.
Megan Duskey, 23, was declared dead on the scene, attributed to head trauma after she fell four floors from the hotel's mezzanine level to the basement at a Halloween party in 2010, Chicagoist reports.
In a lawsuit filed in Cook County Circuit Court Tuesday, Megan's parents James and Deborah Duskey name Hilton Worldwide, The Palmer House Hilton, and party organizers Surreal Chicago and Adrenaline Y2K and allege that negligence on their part contributed to their daughter's death, the Chicago Tribune reports.
Megan Duskey was a special education teacher at Orville T. Bright Elementary School when she lost her balance at the Palmer House Hilton's "Haunted Hotel Ball" in October 2010, NBC Chicago reports.
The 10-count suit claims the hotel and event hosts allowed guests to "consume unlimited amounts of alcoholic beverages" with ticket purchase but failed to provide sufficient security, and is seeking $500,000 in compensation for Duskey's wrongful death, which was ruled an accident in 2010, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
Hilton and event organizers have declined to comment on the suit.
